My firm, Szendel PLLC, is a sophisticated law practice dedicated to providing sensible, strategic, cost-effective and result-oriented solutions to complex problems in Bankruptcy, Litigation and Business Law throughout the New York Tri-State Area. The firm offers a scalable solution for clients ranging from individuals to large corporations who seek high-quality legal services at an exceptional value. A large part of my practice is dedicated to helping individuals and small businesses obtain relief by filing for a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. I also defend individuals and businesses facing lawsuits from creditors or collections agencies in litigation and help them to pursue their rights under the state and federal consumer protection laws. I invite you to read Szendel PLLC's Mission, which is a direct reflection on my vision for how a client-focused law practice should function and a statement of my commitment to you.
I founded Szendel PLLC in the fall of 2010 after practicing for seven years at a mid-sized Wall Street law firm where I primarily represented large corporate clients in complex commercial litigation and transactions. Building from those years of top-notch training and experience, I founded my own law firm so that I could work more closely with the individuals and small business clients who desire high-quality, personalized service from a devoted professional.
Many of my clients come to me stating that they are looking for a "fresh start" and simply want to change the way they handle their finances going forward but first need to solve the problem of their existing debt. This is what bankruptcy is meant to do and I am happy to help these individuals evaluate their options and to work towards a solution.
I have several matters involving individuals or small business owners who are facing insurmountable debt from credit cards. In some cases I help these individuals to file for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy so they can move forward with their lives debt free. In other cases, where we determine that bankruptcy is not the best option given the individuals circumstances, I help these individuals improve their situation by acting as a zealous advocate in litigation against their creditors.

I find bankruptcy law to be particularly intriguing in that it touches every aspect of the law. In this regard it presents different intellectual and problem solving challenges with every new client. I also find it tremendously rewarding to be able to use my skills and expertise to help individuals who find themselves in very difficult situations to navigate this difficult process and ultimately to enrich their lives. I strive not only to help my clients in this regard, but also to demonstrate the value of integrity and character in the legal profession, which my practice allows me to do.
I strongly encourage all of my clients to educate themselves on the legal issues involved in their particular matter. My firm's website provides links to a vast array of legal resources for this purpose, which you can access here. I find that an informed client can better conceptualize the strategies that I develop to achieve their objectives, which is important because it enables the client to contemplate and provide me with the best, most relevant factual information necessary for me to best advance their goals. Informed clients also have a greater appreciation for the value I bring to the equation as their attorney, which leads to more fulfilling and longer-lasting attorney-client relationships.
Often times my clients come to me with documents they have prepared, seeking for me to analyze and ultimately improve upon the drafts. While I will certainly always apply my skills and expertise to create the highest quality work product possible, a sophisticated client's initial draft of a letter or contract, for example, can sometimes save time and more efficiently lead to results. I also enjoy the team-building that comes from drafting and revising documents in conjunction with my clients, which tends to lead to closer, more unified relationships.
This greatly depends on the case and/or issue involved. With each and every one of my clients I am focused on crafting sensible solutions that take into account all facts and circumstances bearing on a particular matter and their potential impact on my clients' short and long-term objectives. While I rarely find it advisable for a client to undertake the task of representing themselves entirely, sometimes it may make the best strategic sense for the client to be the signatory on a letter or the face in a negotiation, in which case I will act as a strong, silent partner and dutifully prepare and enable him or her to achieve the best outcome.
Prior to founding Szendel PLLC, I gained substantial experience litigating multi-million dollar disputes on behalf of large corporations in state, federal district and bankruptcy courts around the nation. I also gained considerable experience in alternative dispute resolution having served clients in domestic and international arbitrations throughout the United States as well as in Japan.
The most rewarding and formative aspect of my prior work experience was the opportunity to go head-to-head with adversaries from some of the largest, most prestigious law firms in the United States on numerous occasions. In doing so I achieved precedent-setting victories on summary judgment on behalf of clients in state and federal court litigation and negotiated numerous complex settlements. I also helped to facilitate major corporate transactions through careful drafting and negotiation of complex agreements.
My clients at Szendel PLLC receive the benefit of this training and experience at an exceptional value.
I grew up in a working class family where I learned the value of hard work, resourcefulness and dedication. I bring this to my practice every day, and my clients get the benefit. My upbringing was also in an entrepreneurial environment and I have witnessed first-hand the people close to me face and overcome the business and financial obstacles that my clients face now. This experience enables me to better relate to my clients, to understand their objectives, and ultimately craft the best strategy to achieve their goals.
I am committed to upholding several core values upon which I founded my firm, Szendel PLLC. I encourage you to read more about Szendel PLLC's Mission to learn about these values, which represent my strengths and commitment to my clients.
In working with clients, I take the time and put forth the extra effort to genuinely understand your business and objective and to get to know you on a personal level. My interpersonal communication with clients enables me to share in their passion and better serve them as their attorney. I can always be easily reached by my clients in emergency situations and always promptly return phone calls and emails.
The bankruptcy process can be complex and each individual case contains different facts and requires a different analysis. Providing the best service possible to a client requires meticulous attention to detail. This is where my experience in handling large and sophisticated matters on behalf of major corporations benefits my individual and small business Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcy clients. I view each of my bankruptcy matters as deserving of the same level of attention and dedication as the cases I handled on behalf of Fortune 500 companies.
When litigation is necessary, you can count on me to be a tenacious litigator, shrewd negotiator and all around zealous advocate in pursuing your goals. In any given matter I work with clients to understand their objectives in order to determine the best strategy to implement to achieve those objectives, and keep them informed throughout the process.
I enjoy playing guitar, kayaking, fishing, reading, exploring all the great food and entertainment options New York City offers and spending time with family.
