Example Cases

Our client needed to recover a website domain from a prolific cybersquatter. By utilizing arbitration, we were able to quickly and cost-effectively recover the domain.

We filed a lawsuit on behalf of an individual who was a passive investor in a business enterprise and sought reimbursement after his partner absconded with the investment and failed to account for the money. Our client received a settlement for approximately three times the amount invested.

Firm Focus and History

We started our firm to provide comprehensive solutions for businesses and entrepreneurs; applying legal training, experience, and knowledge to real-world problems. We offer comprehensive business services which include both traditional legal work and business consulting. We represent start-up ventures, Inc. 500 companies, and international businesses. No matter the size of the business, all of our clients expect and receive the same great service focused on anticipating and preventing problems through carefully drafted and negotiated contracts, proper business structure, planning, and risk analysis.

Our business clients consider us part of the team, because we offer the availability and involvement of in-house counsel, but the resources and perspective of an outside firm. Aside from "traditional" legal work, our clients call upon us to identify business opportunities, research market data, and streamline their systems.

This is also why we are also entrusted with high-risk, complex lawsuits, from business to real estate to entertainment, from fifty-thousand dollars to over one-million.

Our practice areas include business, litigation, intellectual property, cyberlaw, entertainment, and real estate.

Previous Employment Summary

While earning my law degree, I worked for a large publicly traded company in both the Legal and Human Resources Departments. While there, I drafted numerous internal forms and established policies, rules, and processes. Among other accomplishments, I created the company's employee handbook, consumer claims process, revised license agreements, assisted in the creation of their records retention program, and restructured their patent application process -- successfully reducing throughput from four months to thirty days.

Activities and Awards

• Arbitrator for the Santa Monica Bar Association
• Arbitrator and Mediator for the Los Angeles County Bar Association
• Expert Witness regarding true retainers/non-refundable retainer agreements in Phil Spector v. Robert Shapiro
• Teacher for the Pepperdine University-Geoffrey H. Palmer Center Microfinance Program

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Most legal problems are more easily solved if the client is an active participant in the process. As a result, we encourage our clients to learn about the law. We are happy to work with clients who wish to be involved in the representation, and we are always available to explain legal issues or discuss strategy.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We regularly review documents prepared by our ongoing clients. Often, a document prepared by a client presents a good starting point for a contract or other legal document.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

We have worked with self-represented clients in the past. In appropriate circumstances, individuals may cut costs by representing themselves with occasional assistance from an attorney.

If a business is involved, this is not possible--in California, only an attorney can represent a Corporation or LLC in a lawsuit (except in small claims court where you cannot be represented by an attorney). Also, the courts expect self-represented litigants to know the law and court procedure as well as an attorney.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

To gain knowledge and experience that adds value to businesses.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

While earning my undergraduate degree I started a coffee shop serving approximately 1,100 dorm residents. We understand that business needs don't fit into a standard formula, aren't nine to five, and can't always wait until Monday. We understand that legal strategy and business strategy are intertwined.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I have always been entrepreneur. I enjoy business, negotiations, and going to court.

What do you like best about your career?

Winning.

Tell us about your law firm:

My partner, Leigh Chandler, graduated Summa Cum Laude (highest honors) from the Commonwealth College Honors Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a minor in Psychology. While there she earned the President's Award in English, which is granted to the top student in the University's English Department. Leigh graduated from law school Cum Laude and in the top 15% of her class, with a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from the prestigious Straus Institute, in addition to her law degree.

What are your strengths and style?

I maintain open lines of communication with my clients to ensure that they are up to date on their matter. I explain the pros and cons of any decision that needs to be made, including how much time and expenses are involved, so that there are no surprise bills.

Personal Interests:

I am a stock trader and rockclimber.

As with transactional matters, any amount remaining at the end of the representation is refunded.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
