Jan Masaoka

Jan Masaoka is a leading writer and thinker on nonprofit organizations with decades of experience consulting to nonprofits in boards, finance, and strategy. She is currently editor-in-chief and writer for Blue Avocado (www.blueavocado.org), a popular and influential online nonprofit magazine with 62,000 subscribers. She was the executive director for 14 years of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services (www.compasspoint.org), a national consulting and training firm for nonprofits based in San Francisco. In that position, she was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by NonProfit Times in 2003 and has been named eight times as one of the “Fifty Most Influential People” in the nonprofit sector nationwide. She was named California Community Leader of the Year in 2005 by Leadership California.

Jan’s books include The Best of the Board Café  (Fieldstone Press, Second Edition 2009). It was the Gold Award Winner in the Business & Economics category in ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award, 2004. She also wrote All Hands on Board: The Board of Directors in All-Volunteer Organizations (BoardSource), and coauthored Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability (Jossey-Bass). She has published research on many nonprofit topics and is a frequent keynote speaker at nonprofit conferences as well as contributor to nonprofit journals.

Jan lectured at Golden Gate University in the Masters of Public Administration program, teaching nonprofit finance, and was an Adjunct Faculty of California State University East Bay in the Nonprofit Management Program. She also was a board member of the Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management at the University of San Francisco.

Jan’s community contributions include serving as the Chair of the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center (www.apiwellness.org) and as Founding Board President of the San Francisco Foundation Community Initiative Funds (www.communityin.org).  She is a board member of New America Media (www.newamericamedia.org) and an Advisory Board member for the Stanford Social Innovation Review (www.ssireview.org). She is also on the Knowledge Advisory Board for Bridgespan.
