Online Legal Editor
We're looking for someone to join our editorial team, which works closely with technical and marketing departments to create and offer innovative, top-quality legal information and products to consumers online
You'll write and edit material for Nolo.com, recommend and help develop new online products, services, and website features, and find, hire and edit outside writers.
You'll need to keep up with online publishing trends, know the competition, and always be looking for opportunities for Nolo in all kinds of online environments, including nolo.com, other websites, smart phones, and more.
You'll need to be able to handle several projects at the same time and to work well with staff in other departments. You must be enthusiastic about learning new online development and content management tools.
Qualifications:
- At least three years' website writing, editing, design, and/or product development experience
- Knowledge of law and business
- Ability to write quickly and well
- Knowledge of SEO principles
- Legal education or experience a big plus

Web Applications Developer - Java (Temporary)
Are you an independent contractor on the verge of burning out? Are you working odd hours? Too many hours? Too few hours? Would you like to work a 6 month gig and take a rest from the stress of drumming up new business?
Come check out Nolo, a great Berkeley company with a mission to provide legal information to consumers. We're looking for some temporary hires (not independent contractors) to help us with a major project. That means you'll work full-time on site with us for about 6 months.
Our friendly, hard-working web development team has just begun a complete redesign of our web site. We're starting from the ground up with new software, new programming languages and new information architecture and we'd like a Java developer who can hit the ground running with good ideas, creativity, and solid experience building web applications.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement website features and maintain existing applications within J2EE, content management system (CMS) and ecommerce applications.
- Troubleshoot site and web application issues.
- Execute bug fixes as needed for ecommerce & content management systems.
- Perform database projects as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Required Skills and Attributes:
- Java with Spring and Hibernate - prefer 2+ years
- Test-Driven development using JUnit and/or TestNG
- SQL - complex queries, joins, data imports and exports, etc. (MS SQL Server, MySQL)
- Creativity, the desire to work on a large-scale project from start to finish.
- Good organizational and communication skills
- Ability to solve medium to complex technical problems with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- A cooperative, collaborative spirit.
Familiarity with:
- JSP, JavaScript, HTML and CSS
Plusses:
- XML
- ColdFusion, PHP, Eclipse, Tomcat, AJAX, RSS, and/or SVN
- Selenium
- Familiarity with Percussion Rhythmyx and/or Open For Business (OFBiz)
- Experience working on ecommerce web sites
- Good knowledge of browser compatibility issues and web accessibility standards
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years experience working on complex, consumer-facing, database-driven websites.
- 1-2 years J2EE
- 3-5 years SQL experience
- Thorough knowledge and proven ability with HTML, JavaScript & CSS
