Short Cause: A lawsuit that is estimated to take no more than one day. A short cause case may get priority for courtroom space because it can fill a time-slot between bigger cases. However, if a supposed "short cause" lasts beyond one day the judge is authorized to declare a mistrial and the case will be reset later as a "long cause."
