Christian Legal Society v. Martinez (2010) Definition

A U.S. Supreme Court case ruling that the University of California - Hastings College of Law (Hastings) did not violate the Christian Legal Society's (CLS) First Amendment free speech or expressive association rights when Hastings denied CLS recognition as a student organization. Hastings' student organization recognition policy required all organizations to accept as members all students who wished to join. CLS excluded homosexuals from membership, which Hastings said violated its policy.
