Reprint FAQ
Why do I need to get permission?
Reproducing copyrighted work or trademarks without the owner’s permission is known as infringement. Infringement leaves you vulnerable to lawsuits from the copyright or trademark owner. As law publishers who invest time, energy and money into making the best legal information available anywhere, we take infringement very seriously.
How hard is it to get permission from Nolo?
We try to make it easy with our permissions application, which you can download from this page in either Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word versions.
Why can’t I just call someone at Nolo and ask for permission?
First, Nolo never grants permission verbally. No matter what, your permission request is going to have to be written down. Written permission protects you and Nolo’s authors. It’s also common sense: since you are requesting permission to use printed materials, it’s logical to get things in writing.
Also, the form is faster. Because it asks exactly what we need to know, it is the most efficient way for us to review and respond to your requests. It takes us more time to return calls than it does to review a completed form. If we can all skip that call, we all save time.
May I use my company’s form?
You may request permission using your company’s form – but that will take us more time to process because we must carefully review it to make sure it accurately reflects our policies. This can add weeks or even months to the approval process.
Why doesn’t Nolo have a price list for reprint rights? Or provide a list of free content?
We publish hundreds of titles, articles and digital products. For each, the royalty and financial arrangements vary – and they also vary by the type of permission. For example, reprint rights for an entire book are different from a one-page excerpt. Reprint rights for one-time academic use are different from rights to resell our content. Because of the richness of our product line and our author obligations, we can’t provide a simple price list. Instead we work with individual partners to come up with a program that best suits their needs.
How soon can I expect to have my permission granted?
You can expect to be contacted for further information or receive a permission agreement to sign and return to us within 30 business days after we receive your fully complete form. If we can grant you permission sooner, we will. A fully completed form will always take priority over forms that are incomplete. Note: this timeline may expand if you are using your company’s form and not Nolo’s.
What is the fastest way to get my permission granted?
Download the Microsoft Word version of the Permission Request & Agreement Form, fully complete it using your word processor and email it to us. Please put “Reprint Permission” in your subject line and be sure to attach the completed form.
You may also fax an Adobe Acrobat version of the completed form to us at 510-859-0027, Attention: Reprint Permissions.
Please note: We try to return all phone calls but we do not provide permission on the phone.
