Q & A: Software Professional Use Licenses

What is Nolo’s Professional Use License program?

Nolo’s Professional Use License grants permission to use our products in a professional setting (for example, to prepare wills for multiple clients).

If you plan to use Nolo software to do any of the following, you need to obtain a Professional Use License:

  • Produce documents for the clients either for a fee or free
  • Produce documents for the public either for a fee or free
  • Use as a teaching tool in any educational environment
  • Provide to the public through libraries

Our standard license agreement is for individuals using the products for themselves, not professionals using our products in their practices.

Why not just buy the retail product at a lesser price and use that?

It would be a violation of Nolo's End User License to use the retail product for professional purposes. The legal penalties for such violations far exceed the cost of the professional license and violators may also be subject to claims under copyright and trademark laws. Professionals who make their livings providing expert advice and services for consideration understand that. Also, the Professional Use License allows you to produce documents for fees without additional charges from Nolo. If cost is your concern, we encourage you to compare our license rates to those offered by publishers for your profession.

How do I get a Professional Use License?

Easy. Just email us and we’ll send the agreement to you (please let us know if you’d like it emailed back or mailed in physical format).

What if I have more questions?

If you have additional questions, just email us your question (for a faster response, please put “Professional Use” in your email header) or phone 510-549-1976 and ask to speak to someone about a Professional Use License.

On how many computers may I install software?

One. If you would like additional licenses and multiple copies of software, these are available at favorable rates. Email us for specifics.

How long is the license valid?

One year from your license date. Note: if we release an update during the term of your license, the update is free.

Should I renew my Professional Use License every year to keep it valid?

Absolutely. Since our software products are updated annually as well as on an emergency legislation basis, this also keeps your practice up-to-date.

Should I register my Professional Use License with Nolo?

Yes! When you register your product you will receive technical support should the need arise. Additionally:

  • Nolo will send you an email when a new version of the program is being released so you can keep up-to-date
  • Registered users can get web updates during the term of the license

How do I stay up-to-date throughout the year?

The web update feature within the software will guide you through the easy update procedure – it’s just a matter of a couple clicks. (This is recommended because the program will automatically assess which updates are required.) Or you can go to our updates service to check for new updates. If you have any questions about updates, please contact our customer service department or phone, (510) 549-4660.

What is the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL)? Should I be worried about it?

Generally, UPL means providing legal advice without authorization. Most states have statues prohibiting the unauthorized practice of law. If you’re not sure, you should check it out with your state bar association.

Please note: Nolo titles provide information and general advice about the law. Our products are not intended as a substitute for advice from a knowledgeable lawyer licensed to practice law.
