Where can I find current laws regarding spam?

QUESTION:

All this spam -- the email kind, not the tinned meat product -- is driving me crazy. Aren't there some laws against spam? Where can I find them?

ANSWER:

For laws against Internet spamming (sending uninvited direct-marketing emails), you'll have to look state by state. Nineteen states have passed laws on the subject, but only California and Washington state have passed tough anti-spam laws. Federal laws have been proposed but have not been enacted. You'll find details in Nolo's online article on this subject, "You've Got Spam." For more information, see the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email website (www.cauce.org) or Junkbusters (www.junkbusters.com).
